HOUSE YOUR STATE OF MIND
A Session by Olivia Garza at My Voice Media Center concentrated on how to create something, a house, out of clay. This house is not just any ordinary house it "was" a house to represent our housed emotions, opinions and events in our lives. Participants were able to talk about what kind of negative responses they encounter in everyday life. Taking words and carving them into the houses made from clay.
After, Participants were finished building clay houses, correctly bonding the walls using one of 3D ART Clay making's traditional methods of "slip and score", the houses were ready to dry. Able to think and ponder the negative walls, roofs and foundations that our mental state of mind may create, Participant prepared to video themselves, one-by-one, letting these houses fall to the floor and break.
The challenge in creating an artwork and having to start over is also a connection these artists were able to enjoy. The clay goes into a big bucket afterward and is re-used. The Participants also participate in Part II of "HOUSE YOUR STATE OF MIND" when they are challenged to let go of the old clay and re-use the ideas of mental health tools in building positive emotional strategies and create a house with good emotions, good memories, and foundations that are created on Zoom sharing the way they feel, positively. These houses, made from the same clay, are then fired in a kiln and glazed in a second firing. The idea of objects, and tools holding importance to artists and mental health tools representing part of that journey is important to us, here, at My Voice Media Center.
Watch the following videos and watch the negativity disappear as the clay breaks and is artistically recorded on video.
